Yesterday morning, 5th of September, Rebecca Cheptegei, Uganda’s National Treasure, passed away. She was a long distance athlete who died because her organs failed. Her organs failed because her former lover set her ablaze. So what was the reason for this attack? Why has Uganda been deprived of a valuable citizen?
By the way, this afternoon, the Mayor of Paris, Anne Hidalgo is proposing to name a sports venue in the city to honour the fallen athlete.
Meet Uganda’s National Treasure
To start with, Rebecca Cheptegei’s professional sports career began fully in 2010. When she represented Uganda in Bydgoszcz. She did not win that race but won the next long distance race in Germany. She went on to win and participate in many other races all over the world. To achieve this feat, she relocated to Kenya which has better training opportunities.
Recently, she was part of the Olympics marathon in Paris where she placed forty-four (44) out of ninety-one(91) women. Dissatisfied with this outcome, she returned home to prepare for the next marathon event in Budapest. Alas! She was denied the opportunity by her ex-boyfriend.
Rebecca Cheptegei was killed because she wanted back the piece of land she bought with her former lover. The quarrel about the land put the ex-lovers at loggerheads till this tragic end.
To close this sad post, is the even sadder realization that Rebecca Cheptegei is third female athlete killed in Kenya in three years. That is an average of one star athlete per year. Now, that friends is alarming. Does it imply that women are endangered in Kenya? Or East Africa? Or that if they are not famous, their deaths would be covered? Will another killer go scot-free?
