MAUREEN OKAM ACHEBE

Dr. Maureen Okam Achebe, daughter of Chinua Achebe recently won a medical award. The award is from Harvard’s Bringam Women’s Hospital.

Dr. Achebe got her first medical degree from University of Port-Harcourt in Nigeria. Later she went to Yale School of Medicine where she trained in medical oncology. And then on to almighty Harvard where she got a master’s degree in Public Health from Harvard’s School of Public Health.

Maureen Okam Achebe was not done. She dug into the research of sickle cell. Her restless nature in research fetched her the ranking of an associate professor in the prestigious hospital. Now she is a medical instructor at Harvard Medical School.

Plus she is co-chair part of a sub committee seeking to demonstrate the benefits of infant, sickle cell screening in Africa. She is involved in clinical trials for recently approved SCD drugs.

Professor Chinua Achebe’s daughter, Maureen Okam Achebe is following dad’s footsteps. She is conquering the medical world after Dad has conquered the world of literature . Even at home in Nigeria, the elegant peodessor has her hands full. She is a commissioner guiding the prioritization of interventions that would address and reduce the burden of SCD.
