Princess Imperial signed to law what was tagged “the golden law” in less than fifteen words, the abolition of slavery in Brazil.
Some years after the “redemptress” as she was called abolished slave trade. This did not seat well with the slave owners. So shortly after the abolition, 1889 to be precise, she was overthrown by a military coup. She went on exile to France the home of her husband- Prince Gaston, count of Eu.
