TRINBAGONIAN HEROINES (2): AUDREY JEFFERS

From only twenty-three years old, Ms. Jeffers had begun feeding hungry school children in Trinidad and Tobago under a society she created called Coterie Of Social Workers. She was born in 1898 to an upper middle class family.

In 1936 when she was thirty-eight years old, she was the first female to be appointed into the Port of Spain City Council. In 1946, she was appointed as a member of the Legislative Council.

As a student in London, she was one of the founders of Union of Students of African Descent, known as League of Coloured Peoples. COSW also established homes for the elderly and for distressed women and for blind people.

After World War One, she started a fund for West African soldiers. She was also an advocate for the education of women and female children.
